Progress in Developing ISO Standards on Structural Monitoring
John Maguire, Lloyd's Register

International standards are being developed in many fields, via technical committees(TC) and working groups (WG) through the ISO organisation. ISO/TC108/WG25, Condition Monitoring of Structures came into existence in September 1999. It is closely linked with 3 other working groups as follows:

WG 24 - Convenor Talaat Tantawy (France) - Condition Monitoring of Structures - "Part 2" - Detailed Methods;
WG 25 - Convenor John Maguire (UK) - Condition Monitoring of Structures - "Part 1 " - General Guidelines;
WG 26 - Convenor Dave Evans (USA) -Signal Processing Methods - "Stationary Analysis";
WG 27 - Convenor Dale Groutage (USA) - Signal Processing Methods - "Non-Stationary Analysis".

The WG 25 standard will provide general guidelines for condition monitoring of structures, using parameters typically used to measure or monitor structure performance, such as displacement, strain, vibration, settlement and rotation. The scope covers:

The standard is being organised and written to be consistent with ISO/DIS 13380 - Condition Monitoring of Machinery, in order to facilitate a consistent approach to condition monitoring of systems. This standard will link in with other ISO work as shown in the attached spreadsheet document.

The first WG 25 Working Draft, dated Jan. 2000, was issued in Feb. 2000, and it is anticipated to move this to Committee Draft stage by the autumn of 2000. For further details contact John Maguire at john.maguire@lr.org.
